John Griswold's new book, Pirates You Don't Know And Other Adventures In The Examined Life is a funny, poignant, bittersweet + sometimes snarky account of everything ranging from creative writing to babies, from race issues in a university town to crocodiles. The author's tongue-in-cheek tone allows him to discuss this breadth of subject matter in an inviting + entertaining way, while still addressing prevalent + important issues. With humor, pathos + poignancy, he touches on his upbringing in a coal town in southern Illinois, how class in America affected four generations of his family, his experience as an army deep-sea diver + frogman, the joys + challenges of fatherhood, what it means to be literate + open to the world.

Griswold is an assistant professor in the MFA program at McNeese State University + is the editor of the McNeese Review. He is the author of the novel A Democracy of Ghosts + of the nonfiction narrative Herrin: The Brief History of an Infamous American City. For nearly ten years, Griswold has been publishing essays in Inside Higher Ed, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Brevit, Ninth Letter + Adjunct Advocate, many under the pen name Oronte Churm.
Hidden Lantern Gallery-Wayne Pate | Line + Form Opening Soiree : April 24, 2014 5 pm - 7pm
Please join us...
Wayne Pate — New York artist, printmaker, designer, aesthete, tastemaker — is featured for the first time in the South in Wayne Pate: Line + Form, a solo show of the artist’s exceedingly sought-after graphic works on paper: silkscreen, woodblock and linocut prints and collage.

In his work, Pate channels the modern in a stylistic language — striking, elegant forms executed with bold and emphatic, yet lyrical contours — that is in dialogue with early 20th century precedents. It calls to mind a time when line dominated over color, when geometric forms permeated artistic production from textiles to jewelry to architecture and furniture design, when the handling of line and form defined a new vocabulary of gesture. Think Matisse in the South of France or his brilliant paper cutouts. Picasso’s nod to the classical, Dufy, Léger, even the styling of Beaton’s photographs can all be seen in Pate’s exquisitely defined aesthetic.

Pate works almost exclusively on paper. The visual impact of his black ink prints and deco-style collages is striking, yet they impart an intimacy, a direct expression of the artist’s sense of style, that only works on paper can provide.

The artist’s Brooklyn studio, on the lower level of his gorgeous and undeniably stylish brownstone, where he lives with his fashion designer wife, Rebecca Taylor, and their three children, is filled with neoclassical emblems and object d’art, design books (an archive that reveals, as he deems it, his biblio love affair), Parisian exhibition posters, textiles, coral fragments. There, as in his work, you find the artist’s perception of the world and from what he draws his repertoire’s focus and that of his myriad designer collaborations.

Pate’s taste for travel and collected treasures pervades the work in this exhibition. The setting of Rosemary Beach is a fitting one for Pate’s first solo feature, as the Mediterranean Sea and Greek Isles, by way of imagery and the occasional pairing of cerulean blue and white, imbues his prints and transports one into Pate’s aesthetic world.

(The exhibition is on view at The Hidden Lantern Gallery until July 13, 2014)
